Designing the Storyly app for Shopify to simplify story-driven content creation and boost engagement for e-commerce brands.
A Shopify app was developed to bring Storyly’s interactive Stories to Shopify stores, designed using Shopify’s Polaris Design System. This app allows e-commerce brands to create customizable, interactive Stories, engaging customers directly from their Shopify dashboards.
The Challenge
The task was to create an app that fit seamlessly into the Shopify ecosystem while providing value to Shopify merchants. We needed to design an app that was flexible, scalable, and easy to use, while adhering to Shopify’s design guidelines.
Research & Exploration:
I began by researching the Shopify ecosystem, learning the needs and behaviors of Shopify merchants, and familiarizing myself with Shopify’s Polaris Design System. This included studying guides and UI kits in Figma to ensure our app design was aligned with Shopify’s standards.
Design Process
The design process began with an in-depth study of Shopify’s Polaris Design System. Using Polaris components, I designed a three-page app focused on Performance, Content, and Settings. I worked closely with the developer and product manager throughout the project, ensuring alignment between design, technical requirements, and the overall product vision.
Each page was designed for scalability and ease of use, ensuring that the app adhered to Shopify’s design standards while remaining flexible for Storyly’s needs. Collaboration with the developer allowed us to fine-tune every detail, ensuring the technical feasibility of the designs.
After the app launch, we monitored user behavior through FullStory. It became apparent that users were looking for faster interactions and clearer navigation. We identified several usability issues and opportunities for improvement, leading to a redesign aimed at enhancing speed and intuitiveness. Working closely with both the developer and product manager, we introduced new features, like Instagram content import, and adjusted the app’s flow based on user feedback. Continuous testing and user insights drove further iterations, ensuring the app met the expectations of Shopify users.
